FOOTBALL: FIFA REVEALS NEW SYSTEM FOR SELECTING QUALIFIED TEAMS FOR WORLD CUP
FIFA has revealed 48 team World Cup plans
FIFA wants World Cup 2026 onwards to have 48 teams. According to the latest plans, the breakdown will be:
UEFA (Europe): 16 slots
CONCACAF (North, Central America+Caribbean): 6 slots
CONMEBOL (South America): 6 slots
AFC (Asia): 8 slots
CAF (Africa): 9 slots
OFC (Oceania): 1 slot
That's 46 total. The remaining 2 will be decided by a 6 team playoff, 1 team per confederation except UEFA. Host country confederation gets 2 slots (What happens when UEFA is the host? In the playoffs, the two top-ranked FIFA teams will play the winners of the knockout games among the 4 others. The first playoff will be in November 2025.
