FOOTBALL: NEYMAR CONFIRMED TO MISS EL-CLASSICO
Barcelona forward Neymar has received a three-game ban following his red card against Malaga at La Rosaleda on Saturday, meaning he will miss his side’s Clasico showdown with Real Madrid.
The Independent’s Ben Burrows and Luke Brown confirmed the news on Tuesday.
The officials gave the Brazil international his marching orders after he picked up two yellow cards in the 2-0 defeat, a loss that significantly dented Barcelona’s La Liga title challenge.
As Sport‘s Rik Sharma noted, referee Gil Manzano wrote in his match report that Neymar sarcastically applauded the fourth official as he headed down the tunnel.
That action saw the Brazilian pick up an extended ban, meaning he will not be part of the team that takes on Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 23.
For Neymar and the Blaugrana, it’s disappointing news and another setback in their bid to retain their La Liga title. As things stand, Barcelona trail their great rivals by three points in the race for top spot, although they have played a game more.
A win in the Spanish capital evidently would have been a massive boost to their chances, especially given head-to-head record supersedes goal difference in Spain’s top flight. But the prospects of victory are shortened without their winger.
Neymar had been enjoying a fine 2017 up until the loss to Malaga.
Although he’s not been as prolific as the season prior, the Brazilian has shown a willingness to take responsibility, commit defenders and often wrestle control back in matches for his team. His two-goal performance in Barca’s stunning 6-1 comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain the UEFA Champions League epitomised that.
Needless to say, at this critical point of the La Liga season, Barcelona could have done without his absence.
